A White Paper on Competency-Based Education the Electrical Industry Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The current model for training electrical apprentices has been in place since the mid 1900?s. It was developed at a time when most education was done in formal, instructor-led classroom sessions. Today, there are many more options that are more effective and efficient. Competency-based education has been gaining in popularity in many different types of educational environments. Competency-based learning uses predetermined standards to determine academic expectations and examines the degree to which students have the knowledge, skills and abilities to complete a process, procedure or task (Competency Based Learning, 2014). Competency-based education can improve the relevance and the rigor of curriculum, and can ensure that students not only memorize facts, but are able to apply their knowledge to practice (Fastre, et. al., 2014). The purpose of this research study is to gather and disseminate scholarly research on the topic of competency-based education and to examine how it might be applied in the electrical industry.
