Researchers have found that midwives desire specialized education in pregnancy loss particularly because bereavement care training is inadequate and sparse, leaving them feeling unprepared for this part of their jobs. There is considerable evidence identifying a mismatch between the care provided by nurses and midwives, and the care preferred by the women experiencing the loss. Further, midwifery curricula provides students with limited preparation in caring for women's emotional and mental health after a miscarriage leading to heightened stress, doubt, and inadequacy in their role. A specialized miscarriage bereavement care training program consisting of interactive online modules, a virtual scenario-based branching simulation, and standardized patients could help bridge the existing gaps in midwifery training and the quality of the care they provide during such circumstances, in turn significantly impacting the post-miscarriage psychological outcomes of parents.
