Soul FOOD: Sistas Fighting Overweight and Obesity Diseases Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Nearly 80% of African-American (AA) women are either overweight or obese. Obesity rates are higher among North Carolinian AA women (48%) compared to North Carolinian women overall (34%). Overweight and obesity drive incidence of chronic disease, which disproportionately affect AA females' quality of life, morbidity, and mortality. Intensive Lifestyle Interventions (ILI) are evidence-based strategies to address obesity by promoting physical activity and a reduced calorie diet using behavioral therapy. ILIs have not been used in AA communities historically. PhotoVoice is one strategy for identifying preferred ILI modalities and characteristics to tailor and target future programming effectively. Phase 1 of Soul FOOD will explore what ILI characteristics and modalities are feasible and acceptable for AA women using PhotoVoice. PhotoVoice themes will drive Phase 2 to develop, implement, and evaluate an ILI tailored for AA women to promote weight loss through increasing physical activity and promoting a healthy diet. Using a mixed-methods approach, we will examine the feasibility and acceptability of a 6-month ILI in AA women living in Pitt County. Our goal is to identify ILI program preferences in AA women to develop a tailored ILI to facilitate weight loss in AA women through promoting physical activity and a healthy diet.
