The West African Monsoon: Onset and Evolution Grant uri icon

abstract

  • This research aims to improve our understanding of the water cycle over the Sahel region of West Africa, which is a crucial component of the global climate system. The onset of the monsoon (summer wet season) in the Sahel impacts millions of people who rely on the seasonal rains for survival. We will analyze satellite observations of rainfall over West Africa along with recent radar observations that I collected during summer 2006 in Niger, West Africa. Funding is requested for one month graduate student full time pay and for 0.25 faculty salary for one month in summer 2007. Outcomes include presentation of results at a scientific conference, a seed project for a future NSF grant proposal, and a graduate student thesis project, which will be submitted for publication in a premier journal.
