abstract

  • As faculty in the School of Library and Information Science, I am responsible for courses designed for students enrolled in the traditional MA in Library and Information Science, the BLIS certificate including book studies at the UI Center for the Book, Teacher Librarians completing their School Media Certification, as well as students from across campus enrolled in the Public Digital Humanities Certificate. The changing nature of librarianship and scholarship necessitates the integration of technology across the curriculum. As such, I am applying for the Old Gold Summer Fellowship to support the re-development of SLIS:6140 Digital Environments, units for SLIS:5200 User Education: Multimedia, as well as the Mobile DH Makerspace Project, a collaborative research project with A.J. Mellon Digital Humanities Postdoctoral Scholar Christina Boyles that will support the development of courses and workshops that can be implemented across the undergraduate and graduate curricula.
The Fellowship will be used to support work over the summer of 2016 in two ways: (1) attendance at the 2016 Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) at the University of Victoria, and (2) several additional weeks of summer research at the University of Iowa specifically focused on developing coursework and other educational opportunities for students. While the Old Gold Fellowship is designed to support one month of work, the Fellowship will be leveraged launch a summer of research dedicated to the development of digital pedagogy for the Digital Humanities and Library and Information Science Curriculum. This research will help to explore innovative approaches to incorporating digital technologies into the graduate curriculum, while further supporting my continued interest in experiential learning as a means for developing critical thinking about technology and the promotion of digital literacy across the graduate and undergraduate curriculum.
