Celebrating Latino Leadership in North Carolina Grant uri icon

abstract

  • We propose to elicit oral histories from 15 Latino leaders in North Carolina, selecting women and men from Mexico, Central America, and South America who have settled in the state and who are active in grassroots organizations, the Latino business community, churches, or health care. We anticipate interviewing each individual in three phases, beginning by developing, with the participant, a list of questions or themes to be covered and the reasons those themes are important to her/him, following with an in-depth interview, and returning for a third visit for feedback on the information elicited during the previous two phases. We intend to share the results of the oral histories with the participants themselves in a focus group format, giving them the opportunity to add to their histories in light of others' experiences. We also intend to share the oral histories with a youth group, Jovenes Latinos en Accion, as well as with the general public during a conference at East Carolina University's Joyner Library, where the collection of oral histories will be housed.
