Oyster reef restoration in Back Sound, Rachel Carson Reserve, Beaufort, North Carolina Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The proposed project will restore 36, 3m by 4m intertidal oyster reefs (0.11 acres total) along eroding salt marsh and remnant marsh shoreline on Carrot Island within the Rachel Carson National Estuarine Research Reserve, in Back Sound, Beaufort, NC. We will construct reefs using shell bags and Oyster Catcher? materials. 24 reefs will be constructed adjacent to salt marsh (protecting 3 acres) and 12 reefs will be constructed offshore of remnant marsh peat shoreline to promote marsh recovery. We have a General Permit in hand from the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management and currently have matching funds to construct half of the reefs proposed.
