Cornerstone: Revitalizing the Humanities in General Education Grant uri icon

abstract

  • As part of a multifaceted plan to re-establish the significance of the humanities to intellectual and professional life, ECU requests a Planning Grant to develop an authentic ECU expression of the Purdue-Teagle Cornerstone model to reinvigorate and recenter the humanities by engaging students with transformational texts in general education. We will develop a two-semester gateway course sequence, including an interdisciplinary introduction to the humanities course and Foundations of American Democracy (FAD) designated courses. Through orientation and advising, students will be encouraged to complete both courses. Students who add three pathway courses from one of five thematic areas will earn a Cornerstone Certificate. Faculty members and advisors will collaborate to develop five thematic areas: Culture and Communication; Sustainable World; Justice and Community; Medicine and Healthcare; and Government, Society, and the Public Good. We will engage with advisors, who are best situated to help students understand the value of such credentials. Our goals are to increase learning in the humanities, demonstrate the relevance and utility of the humanities in addressing contemporary social concerns, and attract additional students to our disciplines. Certificate classes will also better prepare students for future studies, careers, and meaningful participation as engaged citizens.
