This proposal is for a maritime survey of two rivers entering Albemarle Sound in North Eastern North Carolina. Prior work by East Carolina University (ECU) and the NC Underwater Archaeology Branch (UAB) discovered numerous submerged sites in Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. This proposed remote sensing/ground truthing project will concentrate on exploring two Albemarle Sound Rivers (Perquimans and Roanoke) after first consolidating known sites to evaluate vessel deposition patterning. Given local information developed in 2004 and 2005, remote sensing is expected to discover numerous submerged sites. The project period will be 15 March, 2006 to 14 March 2007 with most field activities in July and August 2006. This proposal builds upon the success of a proven field methodology to identify lost and/or abandoned vessels and then create models for discovering new wrecks and vessel graveyards. Previous survey work resulted in a database of over 150 abandoned vessels and wrecks in the APES. These data allowed a predictive model for exploration because vessel abandonment sites fit within certain environmental and cultural parameters including tertiary streams, high, arable ground near deep water, and distance from docking sites.
