Eastern NC Diversity in Rural Public Health Initiative Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Increasing diversity in the workforce of health-related fields is critical to reduce and eliminate health disparities/inequities in the population. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the need for a strong public health infrastructure, especially in rural communities and regions with large percentages of vulnerable populations. Public health applications include biomedical, environmental, biotechnology, and public policy approaches aimed to prevent disease, prolong life, and promote health. East Carolina University (ECU) sits in the heart of the 41-county coastal plains region of eastern NC (ENC-41), a rural region characterized by high rates of preventable chronic health conditions, high rates of poverty, limited access to health care, and a racially/ethnically diverse population. Therefore, we need to be intentional with bolstering programs that educate and train a diverse public health workforce.
