Most Effective Study Methods for High-Stakes Tests: The CPA Exam Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Despite relatively consistent demand, the number of new CPA Exam candidates decreased in 2017 following the release of a substantially updated version that places greater emphasis on candidates' analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. One (of many) factors that influence pass rates is study practices. While developing and maintaining an understanding of CPA Exam candidates' study-taking skills is important, it is even more important when substantial changes are made. Surveying recent candidates, we will investigate which study method or combination of study methods is the most effective way to prepare for the CPA Exam. Data collected will enable us to detect changes, if any, in the successful methodologies used before and after the 2017 change in the CPA Exam. The results of our research will help future CPA Exam candidates improve their scores. It will also help CPA Exam developers better understand, and prepare for, the impact of recent and future changes.
