Trauma Treatment in the ECU Family Therapy Clinic Grant uri icon

abstract

  • If funded, this program would be its third year of Vidant support. This program offers free therapy sessions for low to moderate income clients who experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) or other highly stressful incidences contributing to impaired psychosocial functioning. Symptoms related to trauma and complex trauma increase risk for mental and physical health disorders and social risk factors. The effect of unresolved trauma on families increases risk for parent separation and divorce, family conflict, family violence, and negative outcomes for children. The purpose of this program is to create healthy outcomes for those who have experienced trauma by removing economic barriers that prevent them from accessing effective trauma treatment in a family therapy setting. Most of the clients that are seen in the clinic are low to moderate income and un/underinsured. In 2019-2020, 62% of sessions indicated that the client made $20,000 or less a year, and 70% made $30,000 or less. Data collected at intake shows that most clients have experienced some form of trauma in their lifetime and the pandemic has exacerbated symptoms of anxiety and depression. We have built capacity in the clinic to be able to offer evidence-based, trauma-informed treatment.
