Due to significant shoreline erosion at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores within the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, plans are underway to employ a suite of nature-based solutions to enhance resiliency. This approach comprises several living shoreline restoration approaches, including Natrx, Quick Reef, and Oyster Catcher structures, and vegetative planting. Short- and long-term monitoring at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is another important project component since there is a need to understand how living shoreline design and substrate choice impact shoreline protection and the surrounding ecosystem at different spatial and temporal scales. This monitoring will also help address regulatory agency questions regarding the effects of living shorelines on the surrounding environment and the wildlife that utilizes these waters.
