  • Editing/Publishing Training Workshops and Modules for ENGL 3870 and 4890-4891
In ENGL 3870: Introduction to Editing and Publishing (taught in fall), and one section ofENGL 4890 and/or Practicum: Careers in Writing (every semester), undergraduates gain theexperience of working on a journal and literary magazine, respectively. These students gainhands-on experience as they learn about the production and marketing of print and onlineperiodical publications. Authentic engagement with the critical and careful reading; editingresponsibilities, tools, decision-making; and collaboration required in editing and publishingis essential for students planning careers in writing, publishing, and any context in which theywill create and manage content for publication. For this class and internship, we plan todevelop innovative, reusable training modules for lessons on employing style guides, formatting different kinds of content, fact-/quote-checking, editing, acquiring images andpermissions, and managing layout. Now that ECU is providing Adobe software to ourstudents, we can also workshop with them to prepare content for publication. The modulesthat we develop will augment student learning by providing opportunities for them to practiceediting and designing tasks that the time in the classroom and in the internship office does notallow, given the complexity of the work in which the students engage.
