  • The Laser Technologies Application Group (TAG) hosted many exciting events this year. These events furthered technology access on campus and shared the research resulting from technological applications with the broader community.

In November 2019, we hosted a Zeiss seminar and training session on the automated imaging capabilities of the newly acquired Celldiscoverer 7 in the Cellular Imaging and Analysis Core.
We began 2020 with technical resource seminars in conjunction with our industry partners:
In January 2020, Avantor/VWR presented on several new technological resources, including the ECHO Microscopes and Azure &; Sapphire Imaging systems.
In February 2020, ThermoFisher presented "Gene Editing Solutions: Overview of Cutting-Edge Gene Editing Technologies and Strategies".
To celebrate and promote awareness of how emerging technologies have furthered research on campus, we organized the first Laser TAG imaging competition. This event was originally slated to take place during the ECU Research and Creative Activity Week (RCAW), but due to COVID-19 restrictions, we held the on-line competition for "Capturing the Art of Science". We received many excellent entries. Through the help of our community judges, Emily Jarvis (Executive Director of A Time for Science), Trista Reis Porter (Executive Director of Greenville Museum of Art), and Michael Crane (Associate Dean of Research, Marketing and Outreach for ECU's College of Fine Arts and Communication), we selected the winning submissions for display based on aesthetics, originality, and relation to the described science. The objective of this event was to raise visibility of the numerous ongoing imaging efforts occurring in research labs across campus. Winning entries were displayed prominently on social media (Twitter @ECLaserTag and Instagram lasertag_2020) and on the ECU REDE webpage (https://rede.ecu.edu/laser-tag-2020-rcaw-image-competition/). Once COVID-19 social distancing restrictions have been lifted, winning submissions will also be displayed at the downtown location of A Time for Science to share the artistry and impact of research at ECU with the local community.
