Petra North Ridge Project/Wadi Ramm Cemetery Survey Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Funding is requested for two short-term exploratory archaeological projects in Jordan. The sites of Wadi Ramm and Petra both played inportant roles in trade and military control of the Nabataean kingdom (332 B.C. - A.D. 106) and Roman Provincia Arabia (A.D. 106-324). Exploration at each site however has primarily focused on large-scale, public architecture rather than the residences or burial p!aces of the average inhabitant. Yet these sites have the potential to broaden our perspective of southern Jordan during the Nabataean, Roman, and Byzantine periods. From May IS-May 23,2005 at the request of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan, I will conduct a geophysical survey in Wadi Rarnrn to identify a possible Nabataean cemetery associated with the ancient site. Additionally, from May 23-June 15,2005 I will continue exploration of the North Ridge at Petra by mapping the visible ancient architecture. Both projects will facilitate future investigation of Byzantine domestic structures in Petra and Nabataean burials at both sites. In addition, it will train four graduate students at East Carolina University in site mapping and survey techniques. These feasibility studies will identify the fruitfulness of future exploration at each site.
