Enhancing Student's Mathematical Learning and Writing Skills

The role of mathematics in students’ intellectual development is significant. In fact, mathematics is quite fascinating, and well-designed courses help students appreciate and enjoy mathematics. Mathematics is a subject that heavily depends on problem-solving, which involves intensive writing. The touch screen monitors in the current classrooms (including technology-enhanced) are not suitable for mathematics instructors to write all of the problem-solving processes on PDF lecture slides.
We propose to purchase new advanced devices so that we can produce high-quality videos that record all in-class activities with detailed written problem-solving processes on PDF lecture slides. The videos will be available through Mediasite and Blackboard so that students can have access to them anytime and anywhere. These video resources will improve student learning outcomes and mathematical writing skills. The newly purchased devices will be used in multiple sections of mathematics courses, reaching more than 400 students per year. The effectiveness of these changes will be evaluated by surveys and feedback from students and peer instructors, and by the comparison of test performances with and without the devices.
