ECU Gambling Research and Policy Initiative (GRPI) 2025-2028 Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The overall goal of the Institute is to conduct research on gambling awareness, behavior, risk and gambling-related harms based on the priorities of the NC DHHS (state prevalence, studies focused on marginalized groups and studies aimed at filling research gaps). The secondary goal of the Institute is to be a hub for other gambling research, including projects to be housed under one of the two centers. The GRPI focuses on research in five pillars: 1. Gambling prevalence, behavior, and risk throughout the state of NC, with a focus on under-researched communities 2. Harms caused by gambling, concentrating on reducing gambling-motivated crime & suicidal ideation 3. Gambling prevalence, behavior, and risk of emerging adults and college students, including empirically supported gambling disorder prevention tools and resources 4. Responsible gaming state and/or industry resources, with a focus on understanding and evaluating voluntary self-exclusion programs 5. Filling research gaps in the knowledge of gambling prevalence, behavior, and risk including comparative studies aimed at understanding similarities and differences in gambling behavior, and pathways to addiction based on location, demographics, and other unique criteria
