Collaborative Research: The impact of eddies, fronts, and horizontal stirring on exchange across the southern MAB Pioneer Array using high-resolution HFR surface currents

Our work will improve understanding of small-scale features, their occurrence, dynamics, and impact on the total exchange over the shelf. Exchange dynamics have only recently been observed consistently at small enough scales to quantify their contribution to horizontal stirring and examine their dynamics in aggregate. Using high resolution HFR observations to track individual eddy features, fronts, and their collective movements and energetics, this work will provide a window into the characteristics and drivers of lateral stirring and exchange present over the Southern Mid Atlantic Bight (SMAB).
