Multisite feasibility of BA-HD: An integrated depression and behavioral risk factor reduction coaching program following acute coronary syndrome Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Depression affects 20% of ACS patients and undermines behavioral risk factor management. Post-ACS depression has been linked to higher rates of smoking, lower physical activity, poorer diet, and lower medication adherence. Depression can be successfully treated in ACS patients, but treating depression alone does not improve behavioral risk factors or long-term CV health. Thus, post-ACS patients with depression may require integrated treatment for depressed mood and behavioral risk factors to improve CV health. We recently were the first to develop a BA-based treatment manual targeting multiple behavioral risk factors (smoking, physical activity, diet, and medication adherence) and mood for post-ACS adults with depression (1R03HL136540, PI: Busch). This application seeks to build upon the team's successful BA-HD development by gathering necessary pilot data to finalize the design of a fully powered multi-site efficacy trial. Post-ACS adults with depression and non-adherence to ?1 health behavior will be recruited from three distinct U.S. sites and will be randomized 1:1 to 8-10 sessions of individually tele-delivered BA-HD or attention-matched health education.
