Expanding Clinical Capacity Through the Shared Use of Human Patient Simulators Grant uri icon

  • East Carolina University School of Nursing (ECU SON) relocated to the new Health Sciences Building on West Campus in July of 2006. Previous to that time, the Concepts Integration Laboratory (CIL) had been housed entirely in one room in the Rivers Building on East Campus; the move to the new building allowed the CIL to expand from one into eight labs. In the old CIL, there had been one SimMan adult high-fidelity human patient simulator (HPS), one birthing simulator, and one VitalChild medium-fidelity HPS; because of the size of the lab at that time, the HPS' s had received minimal use. In addition, the nurse anesthesia program, previously housed in Doctor's Park adjoining Pitt County Memorial Hospital (PCMH), also owned one SimMan and one SimBaby. In planning for the new building and eight new CILs, the decision was made to order two additional SimMen and one additional SimBaby. In addition, two VitaiAnne medium-fidelity HPS's were obtained. The new labs also have one pediatric haptic device and two adult devices for teaching of IV psychomotor skills.
