abstract

  • "Capturing the Rural Voice with Community Archiving" will empower families who have been part of the African American farming experience in Eastern North Carolina to share their stories (oral histories) through reciprocal peer interviews and their family photos and records through community archiving. Library staff will provide the necessary training and equipment. With the families' permission, their oral histories and the digitized copies of their documents will be permanently stored and preserved at East Carolina University and made available to researchers, students, and anyone interested in learning more about the African American farming experience. This project will help our Special Collections staff better understand the experiences of our community, enrich our collections with materials that they lack, and ensure that a more complete picture of the rural farming experience in Eastern North Carolina is available. The skills learned during this project will form the basis of a larger ongoing community archiving program at Academic Library Services as we recover from the coronavirus pandemic and build new partnerships with underrepresented populations.
