There are considerable unmet oral health needs for children in North Carolina and South Carolina, with demonstrable disparities in rural, underserved communities. Dental sealants are an evidence-based intervention that can prevent tooth decay. Dental sealant rates are low in many places. This project will work with school-based teams to increase the use of sealants in underserved communities. Up to 8 sites in North Carolina will be funded by The Duke Endowment in a two-phased approach ? a 6-month Readiness Phase followed by a 2-year Implementation Phase. This multi-year initiative will help health departments, safety net providers and non-profit organizations expand dental services into rural and underserved schools. The overall goals are: Improve access to dental care for school-aged children; Improve meaningful care outcomes for school-aged children; and Proliferate programs that have viable business plans that lead to sustainability. These funds will support Technical Assistance in North Carolina. Technical Assistance provided to the 8 North Carolina grantees will focus on developing business plans, clinical care plans, referral management, data collection and reporting, school and community engagement, education planning and family engagement.
