abstract

  • Research will be conducted during the School of Art and Design's K-12 half-day summer camp revolving around the theme STEM to STEAM. STEAM adds the ?Arts? to the STEM acronym (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and serves as a way to see educational integration possibilities made tangible through the arts. The STEM to STEAM summer camp at ECU is a community outreach effort designed to provide affordable summer camp programming for the K-12 learners in our local area while providing opportunities for pre-service educators to gain valuable hands-on experience in teaching. During the camp, we will use local professional educators and art education undergraduate pre-service teachers to teach lessons. Our summer camp provides the NC Space Grant Consortium with an avenue to link up with and engage with our efforts in the professional development of our summer camp counselors. A pre-assessment awareness survey will be conducted at time of registration for participants regarding familiarity with STEM concepts and STEM-related career opportunities. The same awareness survey will be conducted as a post-assessment at the conclusion of the camp to gather data on the results of the camp on attitudinal measures. To determine the camp?s effectiveness on in-service and pre-service educators? level of comfort and familiarity with teaching STEM content, we will use a pre- and post-assessment survey to collect data from our camp counselors. Pre-registration instrument will include demographics questions regarding special learning needs, ethnicity, and gender to determine effectiveness of our outreach to diverse populations.
