Evaluation of velopharyngeal anatomy following surgery Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The purpose of the study is to identify what are the differences from normal anatomy that remain after a cleft palate reconstruction with the buccal flap approach versus traditional repairs. Our overall hypothesis is that the buccal flap approach which replaces tissue missing as a result of the embryologic deficiency will have a more anatomic reconstruction then traditional cleft palate repairs, where no tissue is added and relies on pulling the maxilla together and rearranging the available velar tissue. This hypothesis is formulated by published data showing that there is a difference between normal anatomy and anatomy remaining after traditional repairs. Published Speech data from the buccal flap approach supports the success of an anatomic reconstruction utilizing adding tissue to replace embryologic deficiencies.
