Injuries to children caused by batteries have been documented in the medical literature and by poison control centers for decades. Of particular concern is the ingestion of button batteries, which can lodge in the esophagus, leading to serious complications. The Energizer battery company has recently developed a novel type of button battery that they believe will be less damaging if ingested. The proposed studies will assess the level of toxicity of these newly formulated batteries on live esophageal tissue collected from pigs.
