Research on retention in STEM shows that high-impact practices such as undergraduate research and living-learning programs can play an important part in helping students change the norm, so that they are retained in STEM and complete a STEM degree. We are pleased that five ECU students are applying to the NIST Gaithersburg program this year. We recommend that each be accepted, and believe that they will be an important asset to your program. They are all self-starting and completed the applications without any prompting from me, which bodes well for their engagement with the program should they be accepted.
