CFLE Promotion Workshop Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The purpose of this project is to develop and implement a workshop on the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) program for working family professionals in eastern North Carolina. NCFR sponsors the only national program to certify family life educators. The CFLE program encourages applications from all professionals with course work and experience in family life education including formal teaching, community education, curriculum and resource development, health care, military family support, counseling, and ministry. Family life education provides skills and knowledge to enrich individual and family life. The family and community services curriculum within the department of Child Development and Family Relations at ECU is CFLE approved by NCFR. In other words, if students majoring in family and community services take the approved coursework, they are eligible for the CFLE credential upon graduating. This is an abbreviated application process that gives them a provisional certification. Currently, there are not many CFLEs working in area agencies and organizations that serve children and families. Consequently, the specific project objectives are to familiarize agency representatives with family life education, the CFLE credential, and the application process in order to (a) increase the number of area family professionals who are CFLE, (b) increase the number of CFLEs hired by area agencies and organizations, and (c) increase awareness and visibility of the CFLE designation in eastern North Carolina. The principle investigators will develop and implement a workshop for employees of agencies and organizations that are used as internship sites for family and community services students. This program will address family life education, the CFLE credential, benefits of obtaining the credential, and benefits of hiring employees that have this credential.
