Pitt County Reentry Program - Strive project Grant uri icon

abstract

  • Each year, more than 600,000 individuals are released from jail or prison across the United States. In North Carolina, 22,327 offenders were released from incarceration in 2013. Many of these individuals face complex and multifaceted obstacles making their transition back into the community very challenging. Most notably, returning citizens report having a very difficult time securing housing and employment, as well as obtaining access to mental health and/or substance abuse services. Obtaining and maintaining sobriety is essential for an individual to obtain stable employment and housing, thereby decreasing the likelihood of a person returning to jail or prison. The purpose of this project is to provide mental health & substance abuse services to individuals returning to Pitt County after release from jail/prison. The overarching goals of the project are to reduce recidivism in the justice system, improve access to mental health and substance use treatment, and increase sobriety rates among the re-entry population. To accomplish these goals, Navigate Counseling Clinic will assign a .5FTE (10 hours/week) doctoral student as project liaison to be responsible for overseeing and/or providing services that include, but are not limited to the following: a) Program/curriculum development; b) intake and comprehensive clinical assessment; c) individualized treatment planning; d) individual mental health and substance abuse counseling (e.g., CBT, Life Skills Training); e) group mental health and substance abuse counseling (e.g., CBT, Life Skills Training); f) community referrals for ancillary services; and g) coordination of data collection for program evaluation.
