  • Since 2004, the Eastern North Carolina Literary Homecoming has offered residents of eastern North Carolina the rich opportunity to meet and converse with artists rooted in the culture of this region. The mission of the Literary Homecoming is to introduce people from the eastern regional of the state to artists rooted in the area so that both might better appreciate the region's culture, history and literary talents. The success of the previous years' events inspires this proposal for a grant to the North Carolina Arts Council to expand the program to a year-long series of events at ECU and in 6 surrounding counties. The events will focus on the theme of Evolving Expressions: Shaping the Written Word. The Theme for the Sixth Eastern North Carolina Literary Homecoming, Evolving Expressions: Shaping the Written Word, explores transforming literature into drama and responding to the visual through music, literature, and the visual arts. Artists who work in multiple genres will participate at the main event on September 25 and 26,2009 through panel discussions, small workshops, musical performances and exhibits of art and photography. This will be held on the ECU campus. Throughout the rest of the year, 17 community Based events are planned in Pitt and surrounding counties to explore the theme through a variety of genres, including performances of plays, discussions of film adaptations of authors' works, workshops and book discussions, poetry readings, art/photography exhibits, and musical performances. The event has been developed by a planning committee composed of ECU faculty and representatives from the community (public libraries, regional universities, community colleges, writers groups, and book clubs.) Evaluation feedback from previous year's programs has been used to make changes in the format and community outreach. Efforts to enlarge and diversity the audience impact the selection of artists, program format and community events.
