Student-Athlete Mental Health: Utilizing Teammates to Foster Help-Seeking Grant uri icon

abstract

  • The NCAA indicated mental health is the most important issue affecting student-athlete welfare. Given that student-athletes are most likely to seek help from teammates rather than coaches, athletic trainers, or mental health professionals, it is vital to better understand how teammate interactions can be leveraged to foster a help-seeking environment. To better serve our student-athletes, a mixed-method approach will identify the characteristics of teammates most likely to be sought for and give help (Phase I) and examine how the quality of teammate help-giving can be improved (Phase II). The results will inform how teammate interventions can address student-athlete mental health.
