Michelle Skipper

  • Dr. Michelle Taylor Skipper currently serves as the Director the Adult-Gerontology and Family Nurse Practitioner specialties of the DNP Program at East Carolina University, as well as North Carolina's only Certficate Program in Healthcare Disaster and Emergency Managment. A long-time advocate for rural and international health care, she has combined her passion for nurse practitioner education along with service to her community, from her local area to long-term service in Nicaragua. She has led two HRSA-funded grants to develop interprofessional healthcare teams. In 2017, Dr. Skipper received the Governor's Award for Public Service, the highest award given to all state employees for her work during Hurricane Matthew. She was interviewed on National Public Radio as a role model of public service and will be inducted in June of 2019 as a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

    Dr. Skipper is a graduate of St. Andrews Presbyterian College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and the Gardner-Webb University School of Nursing.

    She has traveled since 2003 to Leon, Nicaragua providing health care and sustainable water filtration systems for the people. Michelle is proudest to be called stepmom to three sons, 'Meme' to six grandchildren, and 'Aunt Shell' to her niece and nephew.
