Dan Rutzen is a musical director, conductor, and educator originally from Marietta, GA. He spent the last 17 years in Toronto, Canada, studying and working with choirs, orchestras, wind ensembles and live theatre. He was the conductor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto choir with televised performances on CBC, the associate conductor of the Canadian Men's Chorus, and the award-winning Dukes of Harmony Barbershop chorus.
In Canadian theatre, Dan worked at the prestigious Shaw Festival (Sunday in the Park with George), the Toronto Luminato Festival (Rufus Wainright's opera, Prima Donna, Canadian premier), University of Toronto Opera School (Candide), Bravo Academy for the Performing Arts (Be More Chill, Canadian premier), and Theatre Sheridan (On the Town and Newsies!) to name a few. Before leaving Toronto in 2022, Dan was nominated for a DORA award for outstanding musical direction for an immersive production of Sweeney Todd with Talk Is Free Theatre.
This past summer, Dan was the musical director for the 51st season at Hope Repertory Theatre in Holland, MI performing on Tuck Everlasting, Rock of Ages, and Three Little Birds based on the music of Bob Marley
Now permanently back the US, Dan is in his 2nd year on faculty at East Carolina University's School of Theatre &; Dance where he teaches and accompanies musical theatre. This season, he will music direct Once on this Island and Stephen Sondheim's Company.
