Dr. Cummings is currently the Berbecker Distinguished Professor of Rural Medicine, a professor in Public Health, with an adjunct appointment in Family Medicine at East Carolina University. Dr. Cummings is also Adjunct Research Professor at UNC - Chapel Hill. He completed his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University, his doctoral degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, and has completed additional coursework in epidemiology and biostatistics at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. He currently serves as a senior faculty of the ECU Center for Health Disparities. Dr. Cummings has been actively involved in obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular research and care for many years, has led efforts in the development of new models of care, has authored or co-authored numerous manuscripts and presentations, and has received grant funding from federal and state governments as well as foundations. His research, teaching, and patient care goals are to improve care delivery and to prevent the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in at-risk individuals in rural areas.
