Dr. Andrew Vermiglio is an audiologist and associate professor at East Carolina University (ECU) where he is the director of the Speech Perception Lab. Prior to ECU he was a faculty member at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). At CSUN, he ran the Auditory Research Lab. His research is in the area of speech perception in noise and the construct of auditory processing disorders. He has served as a reviewer for several audiology journals. He is a former consultant to the House Research Institute (formerly the House Ear Institute). As a consultant he worked with Dr. Sigfrid Soli on several studies including bone anchored hearing aid devices with adults and a speech recognition in noise test under headphones in a simulated soundfield environment using head-related transfer functions with children. He was previously employed as a Senior Research Associate at the House Ear Institute (HEI) in the Department of Human Communication Sciences and Devices under the direction of Dr. Sigfrid Soli. At HEI, Dr. Vermiglio was involved in the development of the Windows-based Hearing in Noise Test (HINT), the development of the Source Azimuth Identification in Noise Test (SAINT), and FDA trials of the Bone Anchored Hearing Appliance (BAHA) device for patients with single-sided deafness. Additionally, he was involved in the study for the development of hearing guidelines for the California Commission for Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). Dr. Vermiglio has also worked as a research associate in the Department of Auditory Electrophysiology at HEI under the direction of Dr. Manny Don. Prior to HEI, Dr. Vermiglio worked as a clinical audiologist at the House Ear Clinic and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Long Beach. He was invited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to serve on the Committee on Clinical Research, Implementation Science, and Evidence-Based Practice (CRISP). He was also invited to serve as a content matter expert for the ASHA practice portal on Central Auditory Processing Disorders. He was nominated to serve on the ASHA Board of Directors as the Vice President for Science and Research (finalist, not selected). In addition to his professional experience in the fields of audiology and hearing research, Dr. Vermiglio is a former U.S. Navy musician and drum instructor for the U.S. Armed Forces School of Music. He is a former U.S. Army Reserve musician. He has performed and recorded music with a long list of talented artists and continues to perform as a freelance musician.
