Erika Katherine Johnson Carter

  • ; ; ;Erika Johnson is an assistant professor at East Carolina University in the School of Communication. She graduated with her PhD ;from ;the Missouri School of Journalism and with a Master of Public Health ;at the University of Missouri ;(2016). ;
    ; ; ;She earned her BA, ;summa cum laude, at the American University in Washington, DC in Communication Studies. She ;then earned her MA in Journalism (Strategic Communication Model) ;from the University of Missouri, followed by her MPH and PhD work (also at Mizzou). Her primary research agenda includes how interactive and entertainment media formats impact psychological processing and health behavior. She additionally studies how social media and spokesperson attributes (e.g., human voice, attractiveness) can persuade for health and social change.
    ; ; ;Erika Johnson approaches her research agenda from various methodological perspectives. While much of her research explores source in regard to communication persuasiveness from an experimental perspective, she also has employed qualitative research (e.g., a study on health coverage in feminist magazines in ;Mass Communication and ;Society). Additionally, she is trained in and has done research projects using psychophysiological measures (e.g., a study on health warnings and a study in progress on food label claims). In regard to her dissertation, she explored how bloggers persuade ;young female users to engage in drinking and e-cigarette use. ;
    ; ; ;Johnson currently teaches health communication and research methods courses and has taught ;entertainment media, PR, writing, and advertising topics.
