Ford Grant

  • Ford T. Grant, D.M.D., was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and received dental and GPR training at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry (ULSD). He served part time as periodontics faculty at ULSD for five years while maintaining a solo private practice. He later completed the Medicine-Dentistry Geriatric Fellowship at the University of Kentucky's Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. During this fellowship, he collaborated on an Alzheimer's disease study as part of the "Nun Study." After the fellowship, he joined Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, as Director of Geriatric Dental Education and Director of CMC's Special Care Dental Center. In 1997, with CMC, he established Carolinas Mobile Dentistry (CMD), a nationally recognized mobile nursing home dental service. CMD earned the 2001 American Dental Association Geriatric Oral Health Care Award and was recognized as an "Exemplary Program in Geriatrics" by the UNC-CH School of Medicine Program on Aging. Dr. Grant was a founding board member and consultant for Access Dental Care, the leading special-care mobile dental provider in NC. He currently teaches at East Carolina University's School of Dental Medicine, where he opened the first Community Service Learning Center - Ahoskie, helping establish a new model for dental education and service in underserved North Carolina areas. He serves as Clinical Professor and Assistant Director of the ECU SoDM Community Service Learning Center in Ahoskie, NC. He is a past president and Fellow of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry (FASGD); a founding member and Diplomate, American Board of Special Care Dentistry (DABSCD); member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in Special Needs Dentistry (mSND, RCSEd); Fellow in the RCSEd; and a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, Fellow of the American College of Dentists, and Life Member of the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Grant received the ASDA Teaching Award, Four Corners Study Club Faculty Leadership Award, Special Care Dentistry President's Award, and the North Carolina Dental Society Meritorious Achievement Award. He is currently a co-investigator on several funded HRSA Grants focused on pre- and post-doc dental training in Special Care.
